Drivers should be aware of the implications of a DUI conviction

As the holiday season approaches, many people attend events where they are serving alcohol. When leaving these events, a police officer may pull a driver over if her or she suspects they are under the influence. If you plan to attend holiday events and drink alcohol while you’re there, it’s important to be aware of the repercussions that can happen if you’re convicted of DUI in Indiana. Knowing the consequences and planning ahead can prevent you from being tempted to drive after drinking.

What can happen when you drive while intoxicated?

Accidents happen every year involving drivers who thought they were safe to drive. Alcohol affects everyone differently, so it’s important to be aware of what can happen if you drive while even slightly buzzed. For some people, even a small amount of alcohol can cause loss of judgment, an altered mood and exaggerated behavior.

These physical effects continue to get more intense with the more alcohol you consume. A blood alcohol level of .05 can lead to loss of small muscle control, which can affect your ability to focus your eyes. At a BAC of .08, which is the legal limit in Indiana, you may lose self-control, your memory can be impaired, and your reaction time can slow down.

How to prevent driving under the influence

If you’re going to an event where you know you’ll be drinking, make sure that you have a way to get home safely. This may include a friend or family member. You can also call a taxi or rideshare service if you have no one to take you home. Even if you feel safe to drive, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and avoid driving after drinking. If you’re hosting a party and serving alcohol, keep an eye on your guests and help them get a ride home safely if they need it.

Drunk driving is dangerous, and many drivers aren’t aware of how intoxicated they are when they get behind the wheel. A drunk driving conviction could lead to jail time, fines, and other repercussions. Not to mention, when someone drives while intoxicated, they are endangering themselves and everyone else on the road.

Where to turn for help when accused of DUI
